Every Line
Work update and show at CLUSTER
Happy Fall,
I’m bringing a portion of my show Every line is a circle if you make it long enough to Ann Arbors newest contemporary Art Space CLUSTER MUSEUM November 7th.
CLUSTER was cofounded by Thea Eck, Kim DeBord and Chien-An Yuan, three of my favorite people. Ann Arbor has needed a contemporary art space outside the framework of a university or foundation: A truly independent space for rigorous scholarship, literary conversations, and community that honors an array of lived experiences, and craft.
Their first show was The Dam Broke: A Portrait on Tyranny which featured 10 artists whose work dissects fascism and authoritarianism, both current and historical, utilizing Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny: 20 Lesson from the 20th Century as inspiration. Hell yeah. I’m happy to be their second show.
I will be hosting both a kid and adult workshop in conjunction with the opening as well as a coffee club meet up where I drink with you and talk about art and process and complain about our physical ailments. Should be fun?
Everyline is a circle was deinstalled from Traverse City in a changed form. Within the first few weeks, multiple pieces were damaged. Against the advice of the museum, I was committed to not putting the vessel forms under glass - I wanted them to be accessible and not contained. I thought having them protected in a museum setting would make them more artifact and place them in a historical context. The children of Northern Michigan pulled no punches in their destruction.
When they came back dented and punctured I knew what I had to do: continue to destroy the work.
These forms are now forever haunted. Come see them and others in Ann Arbor next month.
Best all,
m

Those vessels are extraordinary. Is there any way you could show pieces of how they are made? Is each geometric shape somehow glued together to make the overall shape? Wow. And the partially destroyed ones are incredible as well. Thanks for seeing the beauty in the handled pieces... they are lovely. Thanks again for your note. I look forward to them Matt.
Regarding Every Line is a Circle: Children need to explore. I find a very soulful love in your decision to continue showing the pieces with the contributions of the children. Thanks.
